Modern Implant Dentistry 2023

The use of dental implants has become increasingly widespread over the past few decades, leading to the publication of numerous textbooks on the subject. As recently as 50 years ago, modern implant dentistry—including implants, bone grafts, barrier membranes, and growth factors—did not exist. In the late 1970s, Brånemark and his colleagues introduced the two-stage threaded titanium implant after years of animal and human research. Since then, implant design has evolved from cylindrical shapes to tapered forms with various body designs and surface morphologies. Many companies have emerged to provide faster and more predictable treatment outcomes, and today the field is rapidly advancing toward digital implant dentistry.

This textbook highlights many of these groundbreaking developments, several of which are credited to its contributors—some of the most skilled clinicians in the profession. More than 50 authors from around the world, each with expertise in different subspecialties, have contributed to the book. Early chapters focus on biologic principles, medical considerations, and documentation methods such as photography and CBCT imaging. Subsequent chapters address treatment planning, digital workflows, surgical techniques ranging from single-tooth extraction to guided All-on-X procedures, as well as prosthetic options and related topics such as soft tissue management and peri-implant disease.

The goal of this book is to serve as a comprehensive, evidence-based reference for both novice and experienced clinicians. All techniques presented are based on real-world clinical experience, and the inclusion of over 60 surgical and clinical videos enhances practical understanding. The editors aim to keep the textbook updated as new research and technologies emerge, ultimately helping clinicians improve decision-making and patient outcomes in implant dentistry.
